In Year 4 we are enthusiastically continuing in our quest to become Very Independent People, taking more responsibility for our own learning and enjoying every aspect of school life.
Along with daily Maths, Literacy and weekly Science lessons, the curriculum includes topics such as Ancient Egypt and Cities, (Autumn term), Anglo Saxons & Vikings (Spring term) and Settlers and Dartmoor (Summer term). It is through these topics that key skills are developed in Geography, History, Art and DT.  There is a weekly reading afternoon to support key reading skills across a range of genres.  The science topics in year 4 are States of Matter and Sound (Autumn term), Living Things and Habitats and Animals Including Humans (Spring term), and Electricity (Summer term). Through ICT the children learn about E-Safety, Scratch, Animation, Databases and Email.  A weekly RE session allows children to explore the religions Christianity and Islam through looking at inspirational people and religion and the individual.
In year 4 we have P.E. lessons on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure that the correct PE kit is in school and each item is clearly labelled with your child's name.  This Autumn term we will be developing our skills in Netball and Tennis.


  • Reading – every child, whether a free reader or not, will have a reading book to take home. We ask that they read every night and where possible with an adult. Answering questions about the book will really help improve their comprehension skills. We are focusing on ensuring that if they do not understand a word, or cannot read it, they need to write it in their reading journal and ask an adult.  Please see below for information about our current reading challenge.
  • Reading Comprehension – will be given out every Friday and are due in by the following Tuesday.  Children are expected to answer the questions in full sentences presented neatly on the paper provided.
  • Spellings – every child will be given a list of spellings to learn. These will normally be given out on a Tuesday and tested fortnightly.
  • Times tables – Please work on times tables at home with children every week. These will be tested and worked on every week in school.
  • Children may also receive occasional Maths and Literacy based homework focused on their current unit of work.
  • Children who would like to extend their learning at home may bring work in to school to be displayed in class. This is always celebrated with the class.
